From Biochemistry to Neural Systems: The Journey of Alejandro Mendoza Escobar


Some career paths are carefully planned from the beginning. Others evolve through courage, self-discovery, and the willingness to embrace change. Alejandro Mendoza Escobar’s journey is a powerful example of how stepping outside comfort zones can shape a meaningful scientific career.

Alejandro’s academic path didn’t begin in bioengineering. He initially entered medical school, but along the way, he realized his curiosity leaned more toward understanding life at the molecular level. This realization led him to pursue biochemistry, a decision that would become the foundation of his scientific career. Today, Alejandro is pursuing a Master of Science in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering (Neural Systems) at the Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei (UFSJ) as a scholarship recipient. His research focuses on the bioengineering of neural systems, a field that sits at the intersection of biology, engineering, and neuroscience. It’s a space where understanding the brain meets innovation and technology, and it perfectly reflects his evolving scientific interests.

But academic achievements are only part of the story. Behind every milestone was a major personal challenge: leaving behind family, friends, and a stable life to study in another country. Moving to a new place meant adapting to a new culture, new people, and a new language all at once. For many students, this leap feels overwhelming. For Alejandro, it became a defining chapter of growth.

One of the biggest turning points in his life was the decision to leave stability behind and pursue graduate studies abroad. It was not an easy choice, but it was a courageous one. Looking back, Alejandro wishes he had discovered international opportunities earlier, such as exchange programs, summer schools, and internships. This realization now fuels his desire to help others find those opportunities sooner. He understands how transformative global exposure can be, both academically and personally.

A decision he is especially proud of is applying for and earning a teaching assistant position. Teaching gave him the chance to share knowledge, mentor students, and grow as a communicator. For Alejandro, the experience of teaching others has been invaluable and deeply rewarding. It strengthened his belief that education and mentorship are powerful tools for shaping future scientists.

His definition of success is refreshingly simple: patience and consistency in whatever you do. In a world that often celebrates quick results, this perspective highlights the importance of persistence and long-term commitment.

Today, Alejandro hopes to inspire students and early-career professionals to start exploring opportunities as early as possible.
